COAL MINING SURVEILLANCE & MANAGEMENT SYSTEM — MINISTRY OF COAL
This policy explains what information the Khanan Prahari (Khan Prahari) mobile application collects, why it's collected, and how it's protected while you report suspected illegal coal mining activity through geotagged photographs and textual information.
The Coal Mining Surveillance & Management System (CMSMS) has been developed by the Ministry of Coal in coordination with the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Application and Geo-informatics (BISAG), Gandhinagar, and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), to use space technology to curb illegal coal mining activity in the coalfield areas of the country.
Khanan Prahari (also referred to as Khan Prahari) is the mobile application component of CMSMS. It is a tool that lets any individual report a suspected illegal coal mining incident through geotagged photographs and textual information, supporting a participative, citizen-assisted monitoring system alongside the satellite-based detection carried out through the CMSMS portal hosted on the National Centre of Geo-Informatics (NCoG).
This Privacy Policy applies to all services and functionalities provided through the Khanan Prahari Mobile Application. It governs the collection, use, storage, and protection of information generated or submitted while using the application, including:
This Privacy Policy applies only to the official Khanan Prahari Mobile Application and related services, and does not extend to any third-party application, website, or service that may be linked from it, including the separate CMSMS web portal on NCoG.
To operate the citizen reporting and verification workflow, Khanan Prahari collects the following categories of information:
Photographs captured within the app, tagged with GPS coordinates, of the suspected illegal coal mining site at the time of reporting.
Description of the observed activity and any other details the reporter chooses to provide about the incident.
Real-time or last-known device location, used to place the report against coalfield boundaries and existing coal block maps.
Device type, operating system, app version, and basic usage patterns collected for troubleshooting and service improvement.
Information collected through Khanan Prahari is used strictly to support detection, verification, and administrative follow-up on suspected illegal coal mining activity, including to:

Identity details, where collected for registration, are used solely for internal administration of the reporting workflow and are handled under the safeguards described in this policy.

Reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards are applied to protect this information against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
While we take reasonable steps to protect your information, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
We retain registration information, submitted reports, and case records for as long as necessary to support ongoing trigger verification, follow-up action, administrative review, and applicable legal or record-keeping requirements. Case data may be retained beyond resolution for historical reference and future monitoring cycles.
